A blocked gutter and a damaged gutter can create similar symptoms during rain. The distinction becomes clearer after debris is removed and the channel has a chance to drain. If water still escapes through the assembly, the failure may be in the seams, attachment, slope, outlet, or material itself.
1. Water leaks at seams or corners
A localized drip at a corner, end cap, or joint may point to a failed seal or separated connection. The location matters: water running over the front edge is different from water escaping through a seam.
2. A section is pulling away from the fascia
Loose fasteners can open a gap behind the gutter and change the slope of the run. The fascia condition also matters because a repair needs sound material to attach to.
3. The gutter visibly sags
A low point can hold standing water and debris. During rain, that section may overflow before water reaches the outlet. Sagging across one short area can be a local repair; repeated low points across long runs may support a broader repair-versus-replacement discussion.
4. Cracks, holes, or corrosion are visible
Material failure gives water a path out of the channel. Small isolated damage is different from deterioration appearing in several sections.
5. Water runs behind the gutter
Water behind the gutter can involve the roof edge, flashing, attachment, or gutter position. It deserves a closer look because the visible drip may not identify the point where the water first leaves the intended route.
6. Overflow returns after cleaning
If a recently cleared channel still overflows, inspect the outlet, downspout, slope, and capacity of the affected run. A blockage farther down the route can create the same symptom as a full gutter.
Document the pattern from the ground
If it is safe to do so, photos or a short video during rain can help show exactly where water escapes. Note whether it happens in light rain or only during a heavy burst, and whether water reaches the downspout. Do not climb onto a wet roof to inspect it.
