Start with the surface, not the machine
Power washing is one exterior-cleaning method, not a universal setting for every material. Concrete, pavers, siding, painted finishes, wood, masonry, glass, seals, and fixtures respond differently to pressure and cleaning solutions. The first step is to identify exactly what will be cleaned and which areas need a lower-pressure or different approach.

Define the result you expect
Surface dirt, organic buildup, and loose debris may respond to cleaning. Permanent staining, failed coatings, oxidation, damaged joints, and material deterioration may remain. A realistic scope separates removable buildup from conditions that require repair or refinishing.
Protect the surrounding property
Before work begins, identify nearby windows, vents, doors, electrical fixtures, landscaping, delicate finishes, vehicles, and neighbouring property. Water and debris should not be driven into openings or across surfaces that are outside the agreed work area.
Plan where the water will go
Runoff is part of the job. The path should not push dirty water toward door thresholds, foundation areas, storm-sensitive landscaping, or adjacent lots. Downhill sites can move runoff farther than expected, while flat areas can hold water near the building.
More pressure is not automatically better
Excessive pressure can mark or damage a surface. Distance, nozzle, angle, flow, cleaning product, and dwell time all affect the result. The correct method is the one that cleans the material without creating a new repair.
Prepare the work area
Before the visit:
- Move vehicles, furniture, and loose items away from the work zone
- Close windows and doors
- Identify exterior outlets, cameras, lighting, and fragile fixtures
- Point out known leaks, loose material, or failed sealant
- Keep pets and children away from the work area
- Confirm access to each surface in scope
Should windows be cleaned at the same time?
Exterior washing can leave water or disturbed residue on nearby glass. If exterior windows also need attention, define that as a separate scope rather than assuming it is included.
